Oftentimes those who typically do not care for the chore of cutting grass may be tempted to cut their grass very low due to the belief that it will save them time from exercising the chore as frequently in the future. This is, in fact, not only a MYTH but also potentially dangerous to your lawn health.

The FACT is simple. Consistently cutting grass too short can create an environment for disease infestation, w**d growth, and also causes the lawn to lose moisture much quicker than that of an average lawn height. Roots tend to become weaker as well with low-cut grass than if you were to let your grass grow and begin cutting with your mower set to a higher cutting height, which is often encouraged for stronger roots.

A decking joist is a repeated board used as the structural base for your deck frame that is attached to the ledger via galvanized joist hangers. Typically, joists run perpendicular to the house while the decking on top runs parallel to the house. Considering this as a vital piece of deck longevity, how do you protect joists from rot damage? Here are a few tips:
1. Ventilation.
Ventilating your joists and allowing them to dry will significantly help to prevent rot damage for years to come. The key to preventing joist rot is in the air circulation. All that (fungi growing) moisture needs a place to go. Designing your deck with vents or ¾” gaps between skirting material to allow the moisture to escape will speed up the drying process which can prolong your joists' lifespan for years.

2. Treatment.
Most pressure-treated woods are treated for fungi and insects, not water. Seal your joists with a water repellant sealer to increase its resistance to rot. Most wood sealers warranty their products to repel water for 6 to 10 years, which is shorter then the life expectancy of your deck. To truly protect the joist you would need to reapply every 6 to 10 years as this can also help to extend the life expectancy of your deck joists!
