Since launching the company in 2011 with just two employees, Dionne has grown Laurel Street into one of North Carolina’s leading private developers of workforce and affordable housing — with 4,000+ stabilized units and more than 6,000 units in development across multiple states. The firm is known for leading impactful public-private partnerships and creating mixed-income communities, including over 900 downtown units in Durham.

It was exciting to celebrate the official opening of this multi-phase mixed-income housing project, a major part of the transformative redevelopment happening in the heart of downtown Durham. This innovative development, led by Durham County Government, is designed to create a vibrant, inclusive community for everyone.

In June 2019, Durham County selected Laurel Street Residential to redevelop the 300 block of East Main Street into a mix of housing, ground-floor commercial space, and structured parking. The project now includes 110 new homes, a Pre-K/childcare center, and about 4,000 square feet of commercial space.

Today’s celebration of this state-of-the-art community—blending accessibility, thoughtful design, and a strong sense of place—felt like a historic moment. We heard from local leaders and key partners, watched the ceremonial ribbon-cutting, and toured the new development. A similar project at 500 E. Main Street is set to open next year.
