Gold Mines of Union County, North Carolina

Long before Union County became known for growing towns and busy roads, parts of this land were marked by something hidden beneath the surface—gold.

By the mid-1800s, Union County was home to more than 30 known gold mine locations, making this area part of North Carolina’s early gold rush story. And this map only tells part of it. Many smaller mine sites, prospects, and local digging areas are not listed here, reminding us that the full story of gold mining in Union County is even deeper than what appears on paper.

Mining here took many forms—from surface panning in creeks to dangerous underground shafts. The work was exhausting, uncertain, and often deadly. Cave-ins, flooding, poor air, and toxic gases were constant threats. Hired laborers and enslaved people endured these harsh conditions, and many of their names and stories were never fully recorded.

At the Museum of the Waxhaws, we help preserve this chapter of local history. Our collection includes artifacts from the historic Howie Gold Mine, one of the best-known gold mining sites in the region.

Come visit the museum and explore the stories beneath Union County’s soil—stories of discovery, danger, labor, loss, and the search for gold right here in our own backyard.

It’s been a few weeks since this closing. The trees and grass are back green now and my buyers are well settled into this Indian Trail, NC home, but I still need to give this home and closing a shout out!
I helped such fun first-time homeowners win this home during multiple offers this spring.
They were referred to me from one of my trusted partners in the industry which is such an honor. March welcomed a new family into this South Charlotte beauty. This is one of Charlotte’s hottest zip codes, and there was so much to love about this five bedroom custom home.
I had the privilege of helping these sellers buy their new home a few months back, and now it was time to let go of this one that had been a great home to them.
They have great taste and the home showed itself off, but I knew with a professional stager’s touch, we could really showcase it. We had it professionally staged, launched it with Open Houses and a drench of marketing and it all paid off. The nicest family found us during an Open House and it was the smoothest process to closing!

Let’s circle back to how February wrapped up. The month of love closed out with a new homeowner loving this Wesley Chapel home complete with their own pool! Toss in Weddington schools and what is not to love?
I met these sellers years ago when our children were classmates, and have followed their journey over the years. Their talents called them all outside of the Carolinas for work so they decided to sell their home here and fully relocate.

Before listing, they took my advice on a laundry list of items to prepare the home and listened to showing feedback along the way. We utilized all the things to help get it positioned and stay in front of the market including a long list of different types of photos, video, virtual staging, open houses, targeted paid ads, price adjustments, and more. This listing and sale had a few intricacies in the transaction that were new for me that I was able to learn from, and I definitely learned more about pools which was fun.🤣
