Interesting history of our little town of York, SC.

Tucked away at 3 South Congress Street stands the Wilson House — a stunning brick beauty with a wild double life!

Built in 1828 as the York District Jail and designed by the legendary architect Robert Mills (yes, the same guy who designed the Washington Monument!), this building was no ordinary lockup. With its symmetrical facade, Flemish bond brickwork, massive interior arches, and barred windows, it held prisoners for 23 years.

Then in 1853, everything changed.

Local merchant William A. Latta bought the old jail at auction for $9,710 and gifted it to his daughter, Annie Latta Wilson. They transformed the prison into a beautiful private home — and locals started calling it the Wilson House.

But the story gets even crazier…

During Reconstruction, when York County became a hotbed of Ku Klux Klan activity, Federal troops seized the house and turned it back into a jail — this time to lock up K*K members!

Today, this incredible survivor is a star of the York Historic District and proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A jail… then a home… then a jail again… and now a beloved historic landmark. Only in South Carolina! 🔥
