Severe storms are expected to move across Virginia today, bringing the potential for damaging winds and quick-forming tornadoes. These types of tornadoes can develop rapidly and often come with very short warning times, so being ready to act quickly is critical.
If a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued:
🌩️Seek shelter immediately. Move to the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows. Interior rooms, hallways, or bathrooms provide the best protection.
🌩️Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including local media or NOAA weather radio. Sign up to receive local emergency alerts via phone, text, and/or email at www.cua911.gov/alerts and City news alerts at https://www.charlottesville.gov/list.aspx
🌩️Be aware of large trees near homes and buildings. Strong winds can topple trees and cause significant damage.
🌩️Avoid driving during severe storms if possible. Downed trees and power lines could block roads quickly. Check road conditions by dialing 5-1-1 or visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/
🌩️Never approach downed power lines. Report by calling 866-366-4357.
🌩️Prepare for possible power outages. Charge devices, keep flashlights handy, and have basic supplies available. Report outages at 866-366-4357 or https://www.dominionenergy.com/outages
🌩️Dial 2-1-1 or visit https://211virginia.org/ for community resources, shelter, food, and assistance.
🌩️Call 434-977-9041 for non-emergency police assistance.
🌩️Dial 9-1-1 for emergency services.
Due to the potential for widespread tree damage, some roads could be blocked for days and power outages may last for an extended period. Restoration efforts may also be delayed if strong winds continue after the storms move through.
Stay weather aware, keep an eye on forecasts, and make sure everyone in your household knows where to go if severe weather develops.
