The Haven

The Haven works to end homelessness and functions as the front door to the homeless system of care. We exist because everyone needs a place to start.

We’ve loving the positive guest feedback after our first major refresh of the Day Shelter space since 2010 – all thanks to Building Goodness Foundation, UVA Facilities Management, and a slew of industry partners and volunteers 🛠️ . After years of heavy use, we needed some help to keep our Day Shelter safe, functional, and welcoming for guests. Work included new industrial-grade epoxy flooring, bathroom fixtures, fresh paint, and a highly anticipated water station.

To the folks who show up before the sun’s up, serve warm meals with even warmer smiles, sort donations until you can’t tell socks from scarves, and somehow make all the magic happen - thank you for being the heartbeat of The Haven! ✨⁠

Last year alone, our incredible volunteers gave nearly 7,000 hours of their time. At Virginia’s estimated volunteer rate (about $34.74/hour), that’s over $243,000 in labor and love. Not that we’re counting… but wow.⁠ 🙌⁠

A Record-Breaking Run for Our Community! 🏃‍♀️🎉

Here’s how race day stacked up:

571 participants crossed the finish line — our highest registration since 2020!
119 volunteers kept the coffee flowing, the food coming, the course safe, and the cheer squad loud 🙌
720 eggs scrambled to refuel runners with protein-packed energy 🍳
600 powerballs rolled — the MVP of our post-race breakfast 💪

Together, we raised over $75,000 for The Haven’s Day Shelter — surpassing last year by an incredible $20,000!

This winter underscored both the urgency and the cost of emergency shelter.

1/27 UPDATE: We have met our goal -- many times over! Y'all are incredible. Thank you. Extra funds raised will be shared with other homeless service providers & community groups supporting unhoused folks, along with work to move people from hotels > housing. More soon.

❄️❗️With extreme cold expected to continue through the rest of the week—and the possibility of additional snow this weekend—will you help us raise the funds needed to keep 82 individuals safely in hotels through Monday, February 2? Donate now: thehaven.org/give-online

The City of Cville has generously funded the first five nights of hotel stays for these individuals, through Tuesday night.

We’re hoping to raise $27,100, with all funds supporting hotel rooms, meals, and the staffing required to coordinate this effort—an average cost of $66 per person per night.

Any amount helps! Thank you for your help keeping all community members warm and safe.

Over our serving window is a big wooden sign that reads: "Come in from the rain." This weekend is no different, despite the conditions being even more life-threatening for our unhoused neighbors.
