Your bathroom is not a rainforest. 🌧️🚿 And if it smells like one, we should probably talk.

This week’s Maintenance Monday is all about bathroom moisture, mildew prevention, and those mysterious smells that seem to appear out of nowhere.

Whether you’re living in a UVA-area apartment or sharing a house with roommates, keeping your bathroom fresh takes more than the occasional cleaning spree.

Here’s the thing: hot showers create humidity, and when that moisture has nowhere to go, it can lead to musty odors, mildew, and other unwanted bathroom surprises.

A few small habits make a big difference:

💨 Give that exhaust fan a job! Run it before, during, and for about 20–30 minutes after showering.

🚪 Leave the bathroom door open after showering when practical to help moisture escape.

🧽 Give your exhaust fan grille a little attention. Dust and lint build up there, too.

🛁 Keep up with regular bathroom cleaning. Soap scum, body oils, and grime won’t magically disappear.

🧺 Hang up wet towels and spread out your shower curtain or liner so they can dry.

🚽 And that pink, orange, or dark buildup in your toilet? It’s not automatically mold. Bacteria, minerals, and everyday grime can all cause discoloration.

Decorating your rental for fall? We love the pumpkins, the cozy lights, the autumn colors, the leafy little moments, the whole seasonal setup. 🍂

This week’s Maintenance Monday is your friendly reminder that fall decor is absolutely welcome, but rental damage is not invited to the party.

A few quick renter-friendly fall decor tips:

✔ Use flameless candles instead of real candles
✔ Skip Command strips, tape, glue, adhesives, and large nails
✔ Use small finishing nails or tacks
✔ Keep decor from blocking doors, stairs, hallways, vents, radiators, baseboard heaters, or window AC units
✔ Toss pumpkins before they collapse into porch soup

Cute decor? Yes.
Open flames, wall damage, blocked exits, and rotting pumpkins? Absolutely not.
