Special Exhibit: A Stained Glass Village, From the Collection of Annalise and Tom Nelson
The Sandwich Glass Museum is pleased to present A Stained Glass Village, From the Collection of Annelise and Tom Nelson, featuring numerous individual stained glass houses and churches augmented with hand-made glass trees and animals. This enchanting glass village was amassed over many years. The collection includes glass animals, trees santas, teddy bears... The term "stained glass" generally refers to the process of combining various shapes of already colored glass, which are held together (traditionally) by strips of lead supported by a rigid frame. The stained-glass houses, made by both Americcan and European artists, may have taken upwards of 20 hours to complete. Many of the glass animals and trees featured in the exhibit were made by a technique called torchwork or flamework. Using an open flame and glass rods, a glassmaker would melt glass rods over the flame, then manipulate the rods to form the various trees and reindeer. The Sandwich Glass Museum is grateful to Annelise and Tom Nelson for the opportunity to share this magical collection throughout the holiday season.
