Due to early nesting conditions, Chatham’s portion of Nauset Beach, also known as North Beach, is scheduled to close to Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) travel to protect unfledged chicks of federally and state-protected shorebirds. Under federal and state guidelines, special protections must be implemented when OSV travel occurs near unfledged chicks.
North Beach is scheduled to close at 6pm on Wednesday May 27, 2026, for the expected hatching of Piping Plover nests. Please note that this timing may change based on various biological factors. If eggs hatch earlier than expected, the beach may close before May 27, 2026. If this occurs, beach rangers will notify vehicles on the beach and instruct them to leave immediately.
In addition, Least Terns have arrived and begun nesting as well. These State-listed shorebirds nest in colonies that are highly sensitive to disturbance and receive similar special protections as Piping Plovers when OSV travel occurs near unfledged chicks. Given the location of nesting activity of both species, Chatham cannot implement a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to allow limited vehicle access at this time.
Until the closure, access remains open on the front beach south of Trail 5.5. The middle trail was closed due to early nesting activity. All regulations regarding restrictions on access to endangered species habitat areas, dogs, and other beach regulations remain in full force. Our Natural Resources staff and shorebird monitors continue to assess beach conditions daily.
We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation in supporting efforts to protect these sensitive species during their critical nesting period. Updates will be posted on the Town’s website (www.chatham-ma.gov) and social media as conditions change.
