Your first home does NOT need to be your dream home.

It just needs to make sense for your life right now.

Maybe it is smaller than you imagined.

Maybe the kitchen needs updating.

Maybe it is not in your first-choice town.

That does not mean it is a bad investment.

A starter home can be exactly that.

A starting point.

It can give you a place to call your own.

An opportunity to build equity.

And a path toward the home you really want later.

Here is another thing people get wrong:

You do not always need a 20% down payment.

Some first-time homebuyer loan programs require much less.

Depending on your finances, credit, and location, you may have more options than you realize.

And yes, the neighborhood matters.

You can change paint colors.

You can replace flooring.

You can renovate a kitchen.

But you cannot pick up the house and move it.

So pay attention to the location.

Drive through the neighborhood at different times.

Check your commute.

Research nearby amenities.

And make sure the area fits your everyday life.

Also, your mortgage should fit comfortably within your full budget.

Not just what you are approved to borrow.

Car payments, student loans, utilities, repairs, and savings still matter.

The goal is not simply to buy a house.

The goal is to become a homeowner without feeling house-poor.

If your rent increased again this year, it may be worth exploring your options.

Not because renting is always bad.

But because you deserve to know whether buying a home in Massachusetts or New Hampshire could make sense for you.

Hi, I’m Sidney O’Brien!

I’m a REALTOR® with Lamacchia Realty, licensed in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I grew up in Billerica, spending half of my childhood in Pinehurst and the other half in Lakeside, and I now call Woburn home.

Real estate is not my only background. I also work full time as a healthcare operations manager and am currently earning my doctorate. Helping people, solving problems, and keeping things organized during stressful situations are all part of who I am, and those skills naturally carry into the way I support my real estate clients.
