Old St. David's in Cheraw was the last church built in South Carolina under the King of England, and it has been standing in that oak grove since. ⛪

The congregation put it up in 1770, a plain white clapboard box with a square tower, because plain was what a frontier parish on the P*e Dee could afford. Within a few years the Revolution came through and both sides used it. British troops quartered in it, then American ones, and it served as a hospital for whoever was bleeding that month. The Civil War did the same thing eighty years later. Through all of it the church kept its walls, its windows and its churchyard.

That churchyard is the part that stops you. 🌳 Soldiers from both wars are buried under the live oaks, along with generations of Cheraw families, and the moss hangs so low that you have to duck to read the stones. Early morning is the time to go, before the heat, when the light comes through the canopy in patches.
