Mount Laurel is where the fight for affordable housing in New Jersey began 50 years ago. Now the township is looking at a new way to meet its obligation: converting nine hotels along Route 73 into up to 826 apartments.

Two of those redevelopment plans have already cleared the local planning board and head to township council next.

It's not without pushback. At least one hotel owner in the mix says the location isn't right for housing, a reminder that even well-intentioned reuse strategies come with real trade-offs on the ground.
