One amazing woman (Barbara Smith) went home to the Lord yesterday! She touched my life from the moment she moved into the Lakes of Greenbrier Apartments. She was this little bundle of energy with a spunky attitude. Due to a turn in her health last year she had to move to assisted living but she continued to participate in our resident events. She could not swallow food but she would call my phone, tell me what she wanted to buy from our resident bake sale (proceeds went to the American Cancer Society) she would then give it to others around her. She was a regular player at our monthly resident bunco, she was determined she was coming each month but her health did not agree. Residents take turns bringing food for bunco. Several months ago Barbara had her daughter bring food, even when she could not attend. Barbara longed to move back to her place with us!

Late last year it looked as though she was leaving this world, she was ready and waiting on the Lord to take her. Then she took a turn for the better and no longer needed oxygen. When she was asked what she wanted for Christmas she told her daughter "I guess I should get a computer and learn how to use the technology since the Lord is not ready for me yet!!"

I was grateful to her daughter and son in law for bringing her to Bunco in December and January! I know I cannot convey enough the impression this women had on my life. She is proof YOUR ATTITUDE has a huge effect on your life. Her body was shrinking below 80 pounds but she had her sharp mind, her STRONG FAITH and determination.

Last Tuesday I had my last visit with her. She did not recognize me (she did not have her glasses on) but the moment I spoke she knew it was me. We talked about her last Bunco visit and how I heard she won. I did not attend because I was sick and knew Barbara was attending so Jerry Walker took my place and was able to help Barbara. Jerry was happy that his last memory and time with Barbara was at Bunco! All things happen for a reason! Barbara told me she was ready to go. I told her what she meant to me and to remember the name Julia Smith when it is time. She told me to tell everyone goodbye and she loves them. I told her to rest and stay comfortable until he was ready for her.

GOODBYE Barbara, you will be forever in my heart.

Life groups/small groups are a large part of the church I attend as we are made for relationships and to live in community with each other. I realize Lakes of Greenbrier has it own life group. One of these life groups has come from our Bunco group. Dorothy would mash food she thought Barbara could swallow and take it to her apartment. Leslie would find juice or anything Barbara said she really wanted and deliver it to her. Dorothy, Leslie, Amber, Janice, Phyllis and Mr. Colbert visited Barbara after she moved out. Mr. Colbert showed me how to uplift someone with his words and compliments to Barbara.

One more thought I realize I was fortunate to come from an area and time in Greensburg, Pennsylvania where people cared about their neighbors, took food to those in need, prayed for each other and visited those in nursing home. I know when I was younger visiting someone in the hospital or nursing home was not my favorite thing to do but I realized if I did not have to go then I would not know the importance NOW. The kids in my life also visited Barbara in the last couple of month. If you don't model it they won't continue it!

I love my job and thankful for people is has brought into my life!!
