What's your experience with flipped houses?

Unbeknownst to this couple, their new $175,000 home in Allentown, PA, was a flip — and it quickly became apparent that shortcuts had been taken in the renovation.

The house seemed move-in ready, boasting a remodeled kitchen, updated appliances, fresh exterior siding, and a refinished roof. But soon after settling in, they encountered a string of problems. A light in the living room was non-functional, and several electrical outlets didn’t connect to any switches. The bathroom lights flickered whenever the hall light was turned on, and a laundry room drain pipe overflowed, flooding the basement.

Not all flipped properties are of poor quality, but a poorly done flip often stays on the market longer than typical for the area.

Jameson Tyler Drew, a developer and president of Anubis Properties in Whittier, CA, points out that longer days on the market (90-plus days) for a seemingly decently priced house is a red flag indicating underlying issues.

Additionally, deceptive cosmetic fixes like new flooring and paint can mask deeper problems. Visible cracks inside may be disguised with drywall and paint, but exterior cracks often reveal serious issues like foundation problems.

These costly and time-consuming issues are typically left unaddressed by flippers, Drew explains. Bathrooms are another area to scrutinize; cracked tile work or gaps between walls and floors can signal significant issues.
