Throwback Thursday and Word of the Day all in one! Aren’t you a lucky bunch 😂.

This week’s TBT WOTD is “Caryatid”. Have you seen these anywhere else? 🤔

The caryatids in this video are at the National Park Seminary, a former women’s finishing school in Silver Spring, MD. The complex, which is now condominiums, was originally a resort and was also once a military medical facility.

Photos from Cornwallis’ Cave.

At some point in history, a rumor began that Lord Cornwallis used this cave as a hideout and headquarters during the final days of the Battle of Yorktown.

Although the rumors of Cornwallis hiding out in this cave are likely untrue, it was used by British forces to store mu*****ns.

During the Civil War, it was used again as mu*****ns storage by the Confederates. The cutouts you see today are post holes where they constructed a log and clay addition.

By the 1900s, the cave had been turned into a tourist attraction and visitors were charged entry to go inside the cave.

Have any of you been here before?

This magnificent hotel has been open for 49,000 days as of today! How incredible is that?

When the Brown Palace Hotel opened in 1892, it was the tallest building in Denver. Another fun fact is that it predates New York’s iconic “Flatiron Building” by 10 years.

It’s Throwback Thursday! I posted about this trestle bridge in 2024 thinking its demise would soon follow, but when I drove by it the other day it was still standing.
