On this national holiday weekend, and before you and I get caught up in spring graduations, re-opened summer attractions, and June weddings, let’s pause a little longer. Our fallen military men and women in US history deserve more than a tip of the hat or putting out our American Flag on Memorial Day.
Originally called “Decoration Day” following the Civil War, this holiday is a time for national reflection, mourning, and healing. We as individuals, families, and communities can remember and honor military personnel who died in the service of our country. Even if you personally haven’t suffered through the death of a soldier, seaman, airman, or Marine from your family, we hope that today you will attended some type of patriotic event, visit a cemetery and/or place flags or flowers on the grave of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, or met with and prayed for a family who recently lost such a loved one.
Without that sacrifice of the men and women who served in uniform, the United States of American would not continue to stand. Our national ideals of liberty, democracy and equal justice under the law are only possible and preserved because of their bravery in battle. The Smith’s and our tribe proudly salute and honor them all!
