News on how to lower your property tax bill if you are a Cook County Homeowner:

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR PROPERTY TAX DISCOUNTS & APPEAL YOUR PROPERTY TAX BILL:

You can APPEAL the property tax bill for ALL the properties you own, they need not be your primary residence. The Exemptions/discounts are the ones that only apply to your primary residence.

The following Townships are open to begin filing your PROPERTY TAX APPEAL (can be done for free through your Township office or online with the Cook County Assessor’s website):

▪️RIVER FOREST-open for appeals until 6/2/26
▪️RIVERSIDE-open for appeals until 6/8/2026
▪️OAK PARK-open for appeals until 6/18/2026

🚨The deadline to apply for property tax exemptions (DISCOUNTS) is this Friday, May 15th:🚨

⚫️ Homeowner’s exemption: this automatically renews every year (only applies if you live in the home as your primary residence),but check to make sure this discount showed up on your bill—sometimes it falls off; otherwise apply for it if you just bought a home;
⚫️ Senior exemption: apply for it if you just turned 65 & you live in the home as your primary residence; otherwise, this automatically renews every year, but check to make sure it showed up on your tax bill;
⚫️ Senior Freeze exemption: this one DOES NOT renew annually, but you must be 65 years of age, you must live in the property as your primary residence & you must meet the financial requirements. There’s an income threshold for this one.
Those are just a few of the many discounts available for Cook County homeowners.

You are able to apply for the discounts and appeal your property tax bill FOR FREE through the Cook County assessor’s website or the Township office.
