Did you know ~ Chicago has 14 historic landmark bungalow districts? These districts are home to a large concentration of, you guessed it, Chicago Style Bungalows. A National Register Bungalow Historic District is recognized for its historical, cultural, and architectural significance. One bungalow in a district may not be particularly noteworthy, but the total collection can hold great significance.

One of those districts is located on Chicago’s Northwest side, the Portage Park Bungalow Historic District. Much of the district was built in the 1920s, with less than 10% of the housing stock being built after 1930. Historic Bungalows make up 189 of the 225 primary structures in this district, and of that total, only 5 bungalows have been significantly altered to remove their “historical and architectural integrity.” 

According to the National Register: “Portage Park continues to remain a stable residential community (...) Residents in the district appear to have an appreciation of and pride in their neighborhood’s history, diverse population, and cohesive architecture. That the district’s bungalows maintain such high levels of historic and architectural integrity demonstrates the attention and care Portage Park residents give their homes.”

Overdue to congratulate my clients Josh and Alicia on their fantastic home purchase! I have to praise their immense patience while navigating a particularly difficult neighborhood to find a good deal within. Luckily I was able to schedule a tour for this property before it hit the market, and my clients were ready and able to jump on a great deal. Congrats again - better late than never!
