1501 Hinman Avenue in Evanston is under contract.

This one was special. The building went up in 1928, a few blocks from the lake, and it was built for a way of living you don't see much anymore. The unit still has its period millwork, built-in bookcases and a wood-burning fireplace. The elevator opens directly into the residence, so coming home feels more like arriving at a house than walking down a hallway.

The roof is what stays with you. From up there you get Lake Michigan stretching out to the east and the Chicago skyline to the south. It's a long view that makes you understand why people have wanted to live on this stretch of Evanston for nearly a hundred years.

Something new is coming to the South Loop and I wanted to give you an early look.

This studio has had a beautiful renovation, and the building gave it plenty to work with. Original brick walls, a big arched window looking out over the neighborhood, concrete ceilings and pale hardwood floors throughout.

What I like most is where it sits. The Museum Campus is close by, Soldier Field is right there, and getting anywhere else in the city is easy. For someone who wants an in-town place and plans to make real use of everything Chicago offers culturally, this one makes a lot of sense.

We're spending the weekend on a different Great Lake. Grand Bend, Ontario, on the Lake Huron side, with friends who had the whole thing planned before we got here.

It's been grey and cool the entire time and that turned out to be the best version of it. Weather that makes you stop at every farm stand between here and there, which is exactly what we keep doing. Buckets of dahlias and black-eyed Susans still wet from the morning. Apples by the basket. Those little orange ornamental eggplants they sell on the branch, which I now know are called pumpkin on a stick.

Lunches run long. Afternoons end by the fire and, more than once, in a nap nobody felt the need to explain. Nothing on the schedule and no reason to look at my phone.

Thankful for Canadian hospitality and for friends who insist on taking it slow. One more night before we point the car back toward Chicago, and the neighboring village post is coming, because Bayfield deserves its own.
