20 years in construction. No insurance. Nothing ever happened. Until it does.
Hiring an uninsured contractor might save you money today. But one accident, one flood, one fire, or one serious injury could put everything you’ve worked for at risk.
And here’s what bothers me most.
Every time a homeowner overlooks insurance to get a cheaper price, they’re teaching contractors that operating without it is acceptable.
Meanwhile, legitimate contractors spend thousands on insurance, licensing, and compliance because accountability is part of doing business.
Good references don’t replace insurance. Experience doesn’t eliminate risk.
Stop asking only how much the job costs. Start asking who’s responsible when something goes wrong.
Before hiring, ask for a current certificate of insurance and verify the coverage.
