Forty years ago, at the tender age of 15, I boarded a plane with a brand-spanking-new passport and a mother brave enough to let me live in Reykjavík, Iceland, for 10 weeks as a foreign exchange student.

I was armed with a Kodak camera and a Polaroid.

And let me tell y’all something about those Polaroids. 

Every time you pushed that button, you were spending about $1 per picture. Film came in packs of 10 and cost around $9.99 or $10.99 at Walgreens.

And nobody complained!

Getting Polaroid film as a gift was a BIG DEAL.

But I digress...

Forty years later, I’m headed to ALASKA, my 49th state!

I hear Alaska’s climate may remind me a little of Iceland, but this trip comes with a very different assignment.

I’m officially an approved Alaska real estate instructor, with not one, but TWO courses approved for continuing education in the state of Alaska! 

That means another state where I get to combine real estate, artificial intelligence, education, and lived experience to help REALTORS® save time, increase productivity, generate more leads, and grow their income.

And yes, I have already planned the FOOD.

✔️ Smoked salmon

✔️ King crab legs

✔️ And I’m going to be brave and try the reindeer sausage!

I already know I want mine with mustard and smothered in onions. My stomach might disagree with the onions, but we’re going to see what happens. 

For now, I’m settling into this seven-hour journey by watching The Secret again.

Because we are not easing into the fourth quarter.

We’re kicking Q4 off with a BANG.

I am walking, talking, living proof that you can operate at the highest level while your heart is completely broken.

It has only been 16 days since my Uncle Butch passed.

In some moments, I’m good. I’m working. I’m handling business. I’m doing what needs to be done.

And then grief sneaks up on me.

A memory.

A thought.

Something I want to tell him.

Something happens and, for a split second, I forget that I can’t pick up the phone and call him.

Tomorrow will be my third speaking engagement since he passed, and I’m learning that grief and purpose can occupy the same space.

I can miss him terribly and still show up.

I can have tears in my eyes and still get on the plane.

I can have a broken heart and still walk onto that stage and give people everything I have.

Because when I think about Uncle Butch, I see him smiling.

I hear him reminding me that he LIVED.

He exceeded his expectations for his life. He traveled to all 50 states. He experienced life fully. He made memories. And he made sacrifices for ME that helped create the space for me to build this business.

My mother, Hazel, has always been my guardian angel in every work endeavor.

Now I've got Hazel AND Uncle Butch.

And in my mind, they are both sitting there watching me.

Guiding me.

Correcting me.

“Nope. Don’t make that left turn. Make a right.”

“Keep going.”

“You know what you’re supposed to do.”

And I’m listening.

So as I board this plane today, I’m not traveling alone.

Hazel is coming.

Uncle Butch is coming.

Some grief is coming too.

I’m not pretending it doesn’t hurt. I’m learning how to carry the hurt while continuing to do the work I know I was called to do.

We have people to teach and lived experiences to turn into lessons.

And we’re going to show people how to take everything life has taught them and use it to run circles around the competition.

When you’re no longer a minor traveling with your parents, it’s time to upgrade your entire travel life.

We were a little delayed getting Austin together because somebody chose a college that’s right down the road, no flights to school required.

But today, we finalized BUSINESS:

REAL ID: 15 minutes. No appointment. We went to the Chinatown location and literally made the appointment while standing in line.

Passport: 30 minutes to upgrade from that five-year child passport to the adult 10-year passport.

TSA and CLEAR (overkill).

Global Entry: THREE minutes for his interview when we returned from Costa Rica.

Clearly, this one has been waiting to get out and explore the world on his own.

Austin, according to travel regulations, you are now officially a GROWN MAN and have been set free into the world.

I completed my to-do list and we head back to college soon.

Yesterday, my 56th birthday became one of the most memorable days of my life.

I didn't have a long list of birthday plans. I had one goal, and one goal only: to meet my sister, Christiann, for the very first time.

Thanks to AncestryDNA, we discovered that we share the same father. Yesterday, we shared our very first hug.

A heartfelt thank you to Nick Libert and Skyler Lemons for helping make this moment possible and for being part of a day our family will never forget.

Happy 56th Birthday to me. 🎉

Life is truly an adventure.

I actually started celebrating a month ago by buying myself the little trinkets and gifts that brought me joy. Yesterday officially kicked off the celebration at the Stillwater Symphony, where I floated on the water for an hour, listening to live music and simply soaking in the moment.

Today is another gift.

I'll start my morning at Pilates. Then I'll experience something I never imagined would happen at 56. I'll meet my 27-year-old sister for the very first time.

This season of my life has been filled with discovery.

I've gained a much better medical understanding of what my body has been trying to tell me. I've learned that healing isn't just about surviving. It's about thriving.

Today I can hold a one-minute plank. I can get up off the floor without using my hands if I need to. Those may seem like small victories, but after everything I've experienced, they're reminders that progress is possible.

At 56, I feel like I'm becoming the optimal version of myself.

Here's to embracing every chapter, every lesson, every surprise, and every blessing that still lies ahead.

To my aggravating husband... thank you.

Yes, I called him aggravating. And yes, he is.

But I also believe in giving people their flowers while they're still here to enjoy them.

The reason we're going to survive this remodel is because my husband made a decision. He decided he wasn't going to argue with me.

Maybe I've finally worn him out. Maybe he's matured after 20 years of marriage. Whatever the reason, I see it.

Every single thing I've needed for this renovation, he's made happen. He has sent every dollar I've asked for without making me ask twice or explain why. He trusted me enough to provide what was needed up front so this project could move forward.

I want him to know that I recognize his growth. I see his patience. I see his willingness to make this process as smooth as possible. I don't ever want him to think his efforts go unnoticed.

Now, let me add one thing.

Because of my mouth, my alpha personality, and my need to be in control, people probably assume I run this marriage.

Stephen is absolutely in check.

But here's the part people don't see.

Stephen has also checkmated me.

Marriage isn't about one person winning. It's about collaboration and accountability. Everybody needs someone who loves them enough to tell them the truth.

I don't get to do whatever I want.

My husband holds me accountable.

And because he does, I hold him accountable.

So today, I want to say thank you.

I see you. I appreciate you. And I'm grateful for the man you're continuing to become.

I joined the National Speakers Association eight years ago and let the perks sit unused until last year. Since then, I've had two interviews on Speakeromics and hosted two webinars for NSA. And today, I finally stepped on the Influence 2026 stage, one of the largest conferences for professional speakers in the world.
