If you are familiar with Prescott you've undoubtedly seen Prescott's Victorian home neighborhood with its wide streets that were designed for enabling the turning around of a horse drawn wagon. There are still some iron rings embedded in the curbs for tying horses and backyard sheds that were used for housing buggies. It is hard to resist the 19th century craftsmanship and hand hewn beauty so I often get inquires about the availability of these "painted ladies" many of which have been painstakingly preserved. They do occasionally come on the market. When they do these homes, which are on the historical registry, come with issues that need to be understood. For instance, I know of someone who did some refurbishing of one of these downtown beauties but unknowingly used modern materials and succeeded in losing the home's historical registration status. Make sure you research and understand the prescribed guidelines before you start a renovation project. Also, there is lead-based paint, asbestos and possibly mold lurking behind those walls and ceilings which require specific EPA approved methods for dealing with them and if you are retrofitting with modern appliances make sure the electrical system can handle them.
Even with some of the geriatric considerations of these 19th century creations, one of these homes may be a worthwhile investment and a personally rewarding project for the right Buyer.
