Photographing History - Yellow Sulphur Springs

This early twentieth-century image shows the hotel at Yellow Sulphur Springs. The first story of the hotel was built circa 1810. The resort remained in operation until 1923. It was reopened in 1926 when ten prominent Black businessmen from Roanoke bought the property and reopened the resort as an attraction for African Americans. It was advertised as “America’s Greatest Colored Resort,” though the resort was later sold at auction in 1929 at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
