In September 1839, a Mexican corporal named Rosario Aguilar was granted the entire valley that's now Poway — free land, no strings attached. He never developed it, took a government job instead, and let the grant lapse. Poway's own name traces back further still, to a Kumeyaay word meaning either "arrowhead" or "watering hole," depending on which historian you ask. Tag someone who needs to see this.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse opened in 1855 at 422 feet above sea level — the highest lighthouse elevation in the country at the time. That height turned out to be its downfall: fog and low clouds sat below the beam so often that ships couldn't see it, and it was retired after just 36 years for a lower one at the water's edge.
