Aldi celebrating 50 years in the U.S.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2026 – It may be hard to believe, but OnSite Retail Group client Aldi has been operating stores in the U.S. for 50 years. Aldi’s first U.S. store opened in Iowa in 1976. It was in the 1980s when Aldi first came to Ohio. The Albrecht family started Aldi in Europe in 1960, according to Aldi’s website.
Peyton Bigora, a reporter with Grocery Dive, posted a story earlier this week about the grocer. In her story Bigora wrote, “Today, Aldi U.S. is regarded as the country’s fastest-growing grocer — a title it has worked hard to earn since it debuted stateside. As early as the 1990s, Aldi was looking at large-scale growth, aiming to open hundreds of stores and enter new markets in the span of just a few years. This continued into the 2000s and 2010s. The discounter’s most recent decade in the U.S. has been defined by yearly store growth of around 100-200 stores, the appointment of a new CEO and regional acquisitions. But Aldi isn’t all business all the time. The company has also garnered a reputation in recent years for fun and youthfulness, whether through stylish swag or hopping onto social media trends.” Click here to read the full story: https://www.grocerydive.com/news/aldi-50-year-anniversary-US-growth-expansion-timeline/829118/
Early this year, Aldi reported plans to open over 180 new stores, and that over the next two years the company has a special focus on expansion into Colorado, the South and the Southwest. Andrew Feinblatt of Cincinnati, OH-based OnSite Retail Group has spent many years working with Aldi, and his efforts continue to expand the company’s presence across Greater Cincinnati, Dayton and western & northwestern Ohio.
