āI sold my last home when I was 100, but I still keep an active license today with The Keyes Companyāthe same company where I got my start back in 1967. I still garden, too, because itās good for the mind. Iāve traveled all over the world to learn about orchids. I even have one named after meāitās a hybrid called the āNell Hammer.ā When it comes to my flowers, I just take good care of āem and they bloom when theyāre ready. You just have to be patient. I still donāt use a computer. Matter of fact, one time I was supposed to take a computer class, and I ended up selling the instructor a house instead. I like connecting with people in person. When I started out, I was going door-to-door every day and doing open houses just about every weekend. I would give my business card to anybody whether they were in the gardening club or somebody I met just passing through. And when people moved away, Iād send them handwritten notes along with a copy of The Miami Laker newspaper. I tend to people like I tend to my flowers. I treat āem right, stay in touch, and they call me when theyāre ready to buy or sell. Iāve had my success, and people always want to give me awards, but I never let any of that get to my head. To me, the biggest reward is the people I get to work with. In real estate, you can help a lot of people and put a smile on somebodyās face. Thatās what makes me feel good. Everything else is just hoopla.ā
