Where we got our name
I have always heard the name of the community comes from the "wahoo" tree. There were 2 or 3 of those trees on Clyde's home place; and according to Wikipedia, there were many of those trees growing in the wahoo swamp area. The community was settled and so named around 1770 during the Creek and Seminole battles with the US govt. As those battles were fought in the Paynes and Micanopy areas and later during the Dade Battle in 1813 and 1823. Apparently these tribes moved their families into the Wahoo swamp area away from the battles for protection. There is a Wikipedia article that mentions all this and the settlement of the church, stores and a sawmill, which was prob Sid's family. Arthur Hayes is very active in the historical society and especially the early indian battles and the Wahoo swamp area. I believe he has some DVD's that he has created describing this and other historical facts.
