Never use a grill, camp stove, or oven for heat indoors; risk of carbon monoxide is high.​
Run generators outdoors, away from doors/windows, on a dry surface; never in a garage or inside, and never back‑feed a house through a wall outlet.​
Close off unused rooms, block drafts with towels, and create one “warm room”; wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves.​
Lights & appliances
Use flashlights or battery lanterns instead of candles to reduce fire risk.​
Unplug most electronics; leave one light on so you see when power returns and reduce surge risk.​
Staying put vs. driving
Avoid driving on icy or snow‑covered roads unless absolutely necessary; if you must go, ensure vehicle is winter‑ready and stocked.​
