Great Paul Cook Photography!

I've taken hundreds of photos of this beautiful building since moving here, but this is probably my favorite image of the Empire Bank Building (Empire1907) in downtown Clarksburg, West. Virginia...straight up! It's such an icon in this small town and it is photographable from a lot of different angles, but this view gives it a totally different look and feel. Great side-by-side by Paul Cook Photography

Two photos of downtown Clarksburg, WV taken almost exactly 100 years apart. I'm not quite old enough to have taken the photo on the left, and unfortunately, I don't know the name of the photographer who did. That early photographer would have taken their photo from one of the upper floors of the Empire Bank Building sometime in the 1920's. I took the photo on the right from the 7th floor of the same Empire1907 building in 2025. There are a lot of familiar local landmarks that still remain from 100 years ago, but the telephone poles, electric wires, and trolley tracks are now gone.

Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere who bravely bears his country’s cause.

~Abraham Lincoln, 1863 Letter

This photograph of downtown Clarksburg is labeled “1918: Parade at the End of World War I” and shows the city celebrating the close of the war. The exact timing is uncertain. Although the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, the leafy trees suggest the photo may have been taken the following spring rather than late fall. The end of World War I brought widespread rejoicing across the United States and the world. One year later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, as the first Armistice Day. Congress recognized the annual observance in 1926, and in 1938 it became a national holiday. By 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
