🥺 He once collected discarded bottles with his young son just so they could afford something to eat. Today, Forbes estimates his fortune at around $3 billion. But the most incredible part of John Paul DeJoria’s story isn’t how much money he made — it’s how many times he had to start over from nothing.

When he was young, DeJoria found himself without a stable home while raising his little son.

Money was almost nonexistent.

So father and son searched for discarded soda bottles, returned them for a few cents, and used the money to buy food.

No investments.

No business plan.

No “startup mindset.”

At first, the goal was much simpler:

feed his child and make it through one more day.

💔 DeJoria did not remain homeless forever.

He took whatever work he could find, especially in sales. He sold encyclopedias door to door, worked for different companies, and gradually learned one lesson that would later become a foundation of his business philosophy:

rejection is not the end.

Salespeople were taught to knock on the 25th, 50th, or 100th door with the same enthusiasm they had at the first.

DeJoria never forgot that.

Then life tested him again.

In 1980, he teamed up with renowned hairstylist Paul Mitchell to create a professional hair-care company.

They expected major financial backing.

But an investor pulled out.

Suddenly, they were left with almost nothing.

Instead of burying the idea, the two men started with what they had:

$700 between them.

🚗 During that period, DeJoria was once again living in his car.

He later recalled counting every dollar, looking for the cheapest food he could find, and using public facilities to shower.

Not exactly the image people picture today when they hear the word “billionaire.”

But they kept going.

No glamorous office.

No huge marketing budget.

No guarantee that anyone would even buy their shampoo.

They went from salon to salon introducing their products to hairdressers.

One salon.

Then another.

Then ten.

Then a hundred.

And slowly, that tiny business grew into John Paul Mitchell Systems, now one of the best-known names in professional hair care.

The company still points to those $700 as its original starting capital.

But DeJoria didn’t stop there.

🥃 In 1989, together with business partner Martin Crowley, he entered the tequila business and helped build what became Patrón, a brand that would eventually redefine premium tequila in the United States.

At the time, the idea of expensive tequila seemed risky.

DeJoria later recalled that a bottle of Patrón sold for nearly $38 when ordinary tequila could cost just $4 or $5.

They had to convince people that the product was worth the price.

And once again, the same principle applied:

don’t wait for the world to understand your idea.

Show it.

Offer it.

Hear “no.”

Then go to the next door.

📈 Nearly three decades later, the result was extraordinary.

In 2018, Bacardi acquired Patrón in a deal that valued the company at $5.1 billion.

Forbes reported that DeJoria owned roughly 70% of the business before the sale and received about $3.6 billion in cash from the deal.

The man who once searched for bottles so he could buy dinner for himself and his son…

was now closing a multibillion-dollar transaction.

🤯 By the summer of 2026, Forbes estimated John Paul DeJoria’s personal fortune at around $3 billion.

He also appeared as a guest investor on Shark Tank. In 2013, DeJoria invested $150,000 in Tree T-PEE.

But there is another part of his story that may matter more than all the zeros in his bank account.

❤️ He never forgot what life feels like when money is scarce.

As a child, his mother taught him that even if you have very little, there may still be someone who has less.

Later, DeJoria joined the Giving Pledge, committing to give away the majority of his wealth to charitable causes.

His philanthropy has included helping homeless people find housing and work, fighting hunger, protecting water resources, supporting animal welfare, and environmental causes.

And that gives his story a very different meaning.

Because it would be easy to turn it into a cheap slogan:

“If he became a billionaire, anyone can.”

No.

Life does not work that way.

Success depends not only on persistence, but also on opportunity, timing, the right people, circumstances, and luck.

But DeJoria’s story does show something else:

today’s failure does not have to become your final verdict.

Being rejected once does not mean the next answer will also be “no.”

Starting small does not mean your future must stay small.

And hitting rock bottom does not mean your story has to end there.

💪 From his years selling encyclopedias, DeJoria carried one simple lesson with him:

approach the hundredth door with the same energy you brought to the first.

Because you never know

which door will finally open.

Once, he had discarded bottles, a few cents, and a little boy he needed to feed.

Then he had $700 and a company almost no one believed in.

Decades later, he had helped build two businesses worth billions.

But perhaps his journey is best measured not by the size of his fortune, but by the principle he has tried to live by:

success means much more when you can share it with others. ❤️
