Found a nice stone today NW of Marble Rock, IA. A nice 7”x7” limestone about 18” deep. This one had been previously found in a survey in 2015, and is now perpetuated with a single wood post in the center of a field of crp grass. Great job perpetuating this survey monument!

Original GLO stone set south of Greene, IA. Used again in 1895 to create lots, and a few times since.. Nice old piece of history! Note the old iron wagon tongue that is protecting this stone’s existence!

Found another old stone today, this one was set on July 7th, 1900. This stone really helped my survey, as the distance to it from the center of the section matched an old fence that I also found at the center, and justified the position well. Lots of survey history to look for around these parts, and when you can successfully locate a very old monument, it really makes for a great day! Always good to carry as much past with us into tomorrow as we can.

In Ames today for a surveying workshop. Continuing education is required for a professional land surveyor, but more than that, it keeps us up to date on best practices, changes to laws, and every seminar teaches something new.
