Sub Zero Temperatures Can Affect Your Home
Whether you own a new home or an old home, you may still have to deal with the issues that sub zero temperatures can present.
If you live in an old home that is poorly insulated, you have probably had issues in past winters with freezing pipes. Don't forget to plug in your heat tape and/or space heaters. Also make sure your space heaters are in a safe space and that their safety features, such as anti-tip devices, are in working order. You should also check to see that exposed insulation has not been disturbed.
If you live in a new home be sure that your basement windows are closed and any exterior crawl space vents have been closed. If you have heat in your basement or crawl space make sure they are set at a temperature that will keep these areas from freezing. Seasonal homes can present even more issues. Even though you may have winterized your plumbing for the season, extended sub-zero temperatures can have serious consequences on your home.
Most homes are not designed to be exposed to sub-zero temperatures for an extended period of time. Building materials expand and contract with temperature changes. Extreme temperature changes may cause fasteners to loosen, fixtures to move and in some cases concrete to buckle. It would be wise to leave some sort of heat source in operation to combat these issues.
