$10 Mattress Fee at the Bi-County LandFill

What’s the problem with mattresses in landfills?

➡️ A mattress takes 90 to 120 years to disintegrate. Breaking them down accelerates the disintegration process.
➡️ Mattresses are bulky and create gaps that provide pathways for liquid trash, known as leachate, that can seep out of exterior slopes.
➡️ This liquid oozing can have potential environmental impacts and lead to violations during regulatory inspections.
➡️ The leaks disrupt operations and are costly and time-consuming to repair.
➡️ To combat the mattress problem at the Bi-County landfill of 23,000 mattresses per year, an investment was made in a mattress shredder for the greatest compaction rates.
➡️ The cost of the machine is partially supplemented by $10 mattress fee.

Illegal dumping of mattresses can result in a Class A misdemeanor and fines of $500 up to $2,500.
