On this day, we remember the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre - one of the darkest chapters in India’s freedom struggle. On April 13, 1919, the festival of Baisakhi, thousands gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar.
Without warning, troops led by General Reginald Dyer opened fire on the unarmed crowd, blocking exits and continuing until ammunition was nearly exhausted. Official British records claimed around 379 deaths, but Indian sources estimate over 1,000 lives lost, with many more injured.
This massacre exposed the brutal reality of colonial rule and became a turning point, intensifying India’s demand for independence.
Today, the bullet marks on the walls and the Martyrs’ Well stand as silent witnesses to unimaginable sacrifice.
