Des Moines is getting a tiny home village for people experiencing chronic homelessness.

One important detail: this is privately funded by Joppa, not simply a city-built housing project. The city has helped clear the path, and if the model works, the public benefit could be real — less pressure on emergency services, shelters, hospitals, outreach teams, public spaces, and cleanup efforts.

Do you think Des Moines should support more permanent supportive housing like this, or focus more on traditional shelters first? 🔗👇

Birdland Park and Marina is moving into the first phase of a major long-term makeover.

The full vision is estimated at about $54 million, with upgrades planned around recreation, river access, trails, and a multi-season skate ribbon. The first phase is expected to wrap up around summer 2027.

Do you think this is the kind of investment Des Moines needs, or is $54 million too much for one park? 🔗👇

Downtown Des Moines has a storefront problem, and the city is trying to address it through Restore the Core DSM.

The program is aimed at helping fill vacant ground-floor commercial spaces by supporting permanent improvements. That could make it easier for restaurants, retail, and other businesses to open in older downtown spaces.

Do you think this will help bring downtown storefronts back, or does DSM need a bigger fix? Let me know in the comments.

Conveyor belt sushi is coming to West Des Moines.

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is listed as coming soon to Jordan Creek Town Center. Local reporting says it is expected to take over the Panera space, with timing likely late 2026 or early 2027.

Would you try Kura at Jordan Creek, or do you think it is overhyped? Let me know in the comments.

Your lawn isn’t the real problem.

The watering ban is frustrating, but it points to something bigger than grass. Central Iowa’s water system is dealing with elevated nitrate levels in source waters, and reducing outdoor watering helps protect treatment capacity.

But long term, the bigger conversation is water quality, nitrates, and runoff.

Do you think the watering ban is a fair short-term fix, or are we avoiding the bigger issue? Let me know in the comments. 🔗👇
