BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Zoo has been reaccredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Of the 31 applications for accreditation reviewed by the Commission during AZA’s Mid-Year Meeting held in Memphis, Tennessee, 28 were granted accreditation.

“Congratulations to the staff at Brevard Zoo for achieving the world’s ‘gold standard’ for the zoological and aquarium profession,” said Dan Ashe, AZA’s president and chief executive officer.

“AZA’s standards continually evolve to reflect best practices in animal care and wellbeing, veterinary care, conservation, scientific advancement, and safety and security, among other things. With this assurance, the public can trust that the animals at (facility name) receive the highest level of care and wellbeing, and there is a deep commitment to their conservation in the wild.”

AZA accreditation includes a detailed application and a meticulous multiple-day on-site inspection by an independent team of zoological professionals.

The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal welfare and wellbeing; veterinary care; staff training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; risk management; governance; and guest services.

Detailed reports from the inspection team and the facility alike are then thoroughly evaluated by the Commission. Finally, the Commission interviews top officials from the facility at a formal hearing, after which accreditation is fully granted, provisionally granted for one year, or denied.

A thorough review ensures that each facility has met and will continue to meet ever-rising standards. As a condition of association membership, AZA facilities must complete this rigorous accreditation process every five years.

“AZA accreditation sets our Zoo apart as a leader among zoos and aquariums,” said Keith Winsten, Brevard Zoo CEO. “We’re proud to be among a select group of zoos and aquariums that maintains such a high standard. Our community can enjoy our Zoo knowing we’re providing the greatest possible care for our animal residents.”

Here comes the train at last connecting Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach to Orlando and Miami

As a devoted community group who cherishes everything Cocoa Beach has to offer, we are overjoyed with the recent announcement that Brightline plans to introduce a new train station in Cocoa. This development is a significant milestone for both residents and visitors, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience.

Brightline's decision to engage with Space Coast stakeholders to discuss a Brevard County station marks an exciting advancement for our community. Katie Mitzner, Brightline's director of public affairs, highlighted the collaborative efforts underway with the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization, Brevard County, the City of Cocoa, and other community leaders. These efforts aim to pool federal, state, and local resources to make the Cocoa station a reality. Although no specific timeline has been set for its completion, the community's anticipation is building.

The introduction of this station is a continuation of Brightline's expansion efforts. Since its inception in 2018, Brightline has grown from a three-stop service between Miami and West Palm Beach to include additional stops in Aventura, Boca Raton, and a significant expansion to Orlando International Airport in 2023. The Cocoa station will serve as an important link between West Palm and Orlando, further connecting communities along Florida's East Coast.

This expansion is not just about improving train services; it's about enhancing access to major tourist destinations such as Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and, of course, our beloved Cocoa Beach. The station's strategic location in northern Brevard County leverages proximity to these attractions, promising to boost tourism and provide a convenient travel option for over seven million passengers, as noted by Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray.

With the train's ability to make the 235-mile journey from Miami to Orlando in just 3 1/2 hours, reaching speeds of up to 125 mph, this service will undoubtedly transform how people experience travel across the region. We look forward to the positive impact this station will have on our community, from increased tourist visits to improved resident mobility, heralding a new era of connectivity and growth for Cocoa Beach and beyond.
