When REALTOR® David Wluka first began visiting the small town of Nowy Dwór, Poland, he was surprised to learn that most of the local children had never met a Jewish person. From the early 17th century until World War II, Nowy Dwór was home to a thriving Jewish community—including Wluka’s father, a Holocaust survivor. Wluka wanted to preserve and honor the history of the Jews who lived and perished there, and he thought the tragic history should serve as a vehicle for change. He helped create a memorial and an annual essay contest, where the town’s youth write about tolerance. Today, local teachers use the Nowy Dwór Jewish Memorial as an educational tool. “My outreach for change focuses on kids—they are the only means to affect it permanently. I believe that only the young will be able to bring us back to a sane world.”
