Here are just a few hurricane prep tips that could save you time and stress. Having enough water for each member of your family is crucial.
Make sure you have an evacuation plan (and your family also knows it) in case you need to leave. If you are staying put, make sure you have one area picked out to hunker down when the storm peaks in your area and be sure to store food, water, medications and lighting (candles, lantern, flashlights, battery back ups, etc.) in that place.
1. Gather all flashlights, candles, lanterns, lighters & matches in one place.
2. Charge all electronic devices and anything that can provide light during a power outage. Don’t forget to charge any backup battery sources for cellphones/laptops. Glow sticks can be useful and fun for kids.
3. Make sure you have at least 2 weeks of necessary medication on hand for both your family and your pets.
4. Pack A Waterproof Backpack of Essentials: Medications, Glasses, Contacts, ID/Passport, Cash, Flashlight & Batteries, Emergency Hand-crank Radio, Water, Food, Important Docs
5. Pack a suitcase in case of evacuation and put in your car
6. Fill bathtubs with water to use in case you need to flush the toilet without power
7. Fill extra water bottles & tupperware with water and freeze it (leave room for water to expand). This can extend the length of consumption time for your food until power gets back on.
8. Lower temps in fridge
9. Take out all trash (haul to dump if pickup does not come prior to storm). If you think it stinks now, wait until you don’t have a/c and it’s 99% humidity😷
10. Clean anything and everything else that might stink, like cat litter boxes and garbage disposals.
11. Clean and sanitize trash cans, fill with water and move into garage.
12. Lower A/C temp as low as you can stand it to keep the interior of your home cool and humid-free as long as possible
13. Make sure you have non-perishable items to eat during times of a power outage.
These are just a few of the top essentials. Check with your local weather station for more useful tips! Best to be prepared!
