Fun and obscure Idaho fact:
Owyhee County, in the southwest corner of the state, is named for three Hawaiian trappers who were lost during the winter of 1819/20.
They had come as part of a migration of Hawaiians to the mainland where they worked for trading companies like North West Company out of Montreal.
In memory of these men, British fur trappers named the region Owhyee, an early spelling of “Hawaii” used by explorer James Cook and others.
It is sparsely populated and includes ghost towns like Silver City and the Owyhee Mountains, pictured below.
