Just an informational picture so people understand what’s taking longer with the power outage and the difference between transmission and distribution.
It is the transmission lines (Number 1 on the picture) causing the prolonged outage. Normally, outages are more localized on the distribution side of things, which are much “easier” to address. Transmission lines however take longer to restore.
Once power is restored, DO NOT BE SURPRISED for your power to go out again or several times for much shorter periods. This is normal after prolonged outages for several reasons: for system operators to balance the load, circuits trip because of blown fuses or transformers, previously unseen problems to distribution lines, etc.
Here are some things you can do to help:
1. Don’t bum rush your thermostats. If you do need immediate AC, don’t just rush to set it to 65°. Start warmer and cool down slowly.
2. Unplug unnecessary appliances to protect from power surges which can and do happen during power restorations.
3. Slowly start introducing power to your home or business’s circuits by opening your breakers in the order of most necessary to least necessary.
4. Expect power to go out again. Don’t overburden our linemen and utilities with calls because the power came on then went back off. If you notice your immediate neighbors have power for a longer period and you don’t, check your breakers, then call.
5. Let our guys work. We’re all struggling, but we’ll get through this. It’s hot, it’s frustrating, but constant bombarding of folks wanting an ETA on restoration is not only unrealistic, it’s an extra strain on our already strained resources.
