It's Water Quality Wednesday!

Your lawn 🌱 care this fall affects the lake next summer. Did you know most established lawns already have sufficient nutrients in the soil and don’t need supplementation? Fertilize less—and fall season application is best. You’ll minimize the risk of runoff that can occur during spring rains, and maximize the roots’ ability to store nutrients for winter. Fall fertilization reduces the need for heavy spring treatments, which can run right into the lake. Lawn fertilizer runoff can cause algal blooms from excess nutrients, deplete oxygen in the water and kill fish and other aquatic life. These blooms can make the water toxic, contaminate drinking water supplies, and disrupt our lake’s ecosystem. Keep these best practices in mind for fall fertilization:

🌱 Fertilize only if needed— test your soil first.
🌱 Use phosphorus-free fertilizer— it’s required by Michigan law.
🌱 Keep a 15 ft buffer from lake & channels.
🌱 Don’t apply fertilizer to frozen soil.
🌱 Sweep up spills on walks and driveways.
