We'll admit it.

The Mississippi isn't winning any "best looking house on the block" awards this week.

There's lumber everywhere.

The walls are open.

And you've still got to use a little imagination.

But that's kind of the fun part.

Because underneath all that framing is a home that's getting closer every day.

And here's the part we don't want to get lost in the construction update:

If you're building a home, it's really easy to spend all your time thinking about the fun stuff.

Countertops. Flooring. Cabinets. Appliances.

We get it.

But there are a few less glamorous decisions you'll probably appreciate a whole lot more once you're living there.

1. More storage than you think you need.
Nobody has ever complained that the pantry was too useful.

2. Outlets where you actually need them.
Think about where phones charge, lamps sit, tools get plugged in and holiday lights go up.

3. Somewhere for the mess.
Shoes, coats, backpacks, groceries, dog stuff. Give everyday life somewhere to land.

4. Lighting that does more than turn on and off.
The light you want while making dinner isn't necessarily the light you want at 9:30 at night.

5. Think about five years from now.

Families change. Hobbies change. How you use your home will change too.

The pretty decisions are fun.

The practical ones are often what make you love living there.

There's a point during framing when a floor plan suddenly starts making a lot more sense.

You can stand in the middle of a room that was just a few lines on paper a few weeks ago.

That's where the Callahan is right now.
There's still plenty of work ahead, but the home is taking shape and we're excited about where it's going.

By the time a home is finished, you don't see most of the work that went into building it.

The measurements checked twice.
The early mornings.
The cuts that had to be just right.
The people who showed up day after day and cared about doing their part well.

That's what we're thinking about this Labor Day.

We're fortunate to work alongside some incredibly talented people. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, painters, tradespeople, suppliers and plenty of others who leave a little bit of their work behind in every home we build.

You may never know all their names.
But you'll live with the quality of their work every day.

We've noticed something over the years.

People don't wake up one morning and decide to build a home. Usually, it starts much earlier.

A neighborhood they drive through more than once.

It's funny what happens after you've built homes for a while.

You stop looking at a floor plan as a bunch of lines and measurements.
You start seeing where someone will make pancakes on a Saturday morning.
Where backpacks will get dropped after school.

Where family and friends will squeeze around the kitchen island because that's where everyone always ends up. That's what we're seeing as the Mississippi Model takes shape. Right now it's still framing. The drywall isn't up. The finishes haven't gone in. But the story is already there.

One thing we always tell people is this:
Don’t rush into choosing a builder.

Take your time. Ask questions. Pay attention to how those questions are answered. Not because building a home should feel complicated, but because the right builder won’t make you feel like you’re asking too much.

A few questions worth asking:
How will communication work once construction starts?
Who will I actually be working with throughout the project?
What happens if changes come up along the way?
Can I see homes you’ve already built?
How do you help homeowners make confident decisions?

And maybe the biggest one:
Do I trust this team with one of the most important investments I’ll ever make?

Building a home is personal. It should feel clear, thoughtful, and guided from the very beginning.
