On Wednesdays, we wear pink.

And yes, we plan it and show up in pink on purpose, and I would do it again next week too.

Pink makes me think of Dolly. She wore what she wanted, said what she wanted, out worked everybody in the room, and somehow managed to be the kindest person in it too. The sparkle got all the attention, but the work ethic and the generosity underneath it are the real story. She has been inspiring me for years!

Not a bad thing to be reminded of on a Wednesday.

Last week, I was handed an Air Force jersey signed by SEAC Ramón “CZ” Colón-López and Lt Gen Bill Liquori, and I am still a little floored by it.

It was given to recognize my team for the work they have been doing to help Air Force families get squared away financially. To be recognized by leaders like that, for work done on behalf of military families, is about the highest compliment I can think of.

The credit belongs to my team. They are the ones sitting down with families, asking the questions most don’t think to ask themselves, and making sure life does not catch anybody flat footed.

This is the mission I am honored to get to do alongside them.

Fun fact Friday: I live on a ranch outside a town of about 100 people with hardly any restaurants around.

So, when I am traveling and a box of chips, salsa, and queso this size shows up at the office, I am not going to stand there and act casual about it.

I came for the meetings. I stayed for the queso. Then I talked everyone into pulling up a chair, because a box this big was never meant for one person.

Happy 251st birthday to the United States Navy!

In the E-2 Hawkeye community, you never take that aircraft anywhere alone. Everybody in this picture had a job, and all of us were counting on the other two to do theirs.

I think about that a lot now. People come in thinking they have to figure out their money by themselves, that asking for help means they fell behind somewhere. Nobody flies solo in a Hawkeye, and nobody should have to plan a retirement alone either.

Happy birthday, Navy. Thank you to everyone who has worn that uniform and to the families right there with them.

Supporting a local team is one of our favorite ways to be part of this community. Spokane shows up for each other, on the field and off it, and we're glad to be a small part of that.

My favorite quote, and one I come back to often:

"Regret looks back. Worry looks around. Faith looks up."

I've watched a lot of people get stuck in the first two. Regret over the years they didn't save. Worry over a market they can't control. Both of them keep your eyes in the wrong place.

Planning is how you look up. It doesn't promise you a perfect outcome, but it can give you something steady to stand on while you figure out the next step.

My experience has taught me that you don't control the weather. You control the preparation.

I have been making baby quilts for friends and family since 1996. I honestly have no idea how many at this point. Dozens? A hundred? I stopped counting somewhere in the middle.

Here's the thing about quilting. I never sit down and make a quilt. I cut a few squares. I sew a seam. I put it away and come back to it next week. Then one day there's a finished quilt on the table and a new baby to wrap up in it.

Turns out most good things get built that way. A little at a time, on purpose, while you're busy living your life.

I didn't get married until I was 41.

I met Todd at the Army War College, and we got married in 2013. One of the best decisions I ever made, and I was in no rush to make it.

I think about that a lot when someone tells me they feel behind on their finances. They're 45 and just started saving. They're 55 and have no idea what their pension is worth. They're sure the good opportunities passed them by while they were busy raising kids and moving every three years.

Here's what I've learned, a great time to start was probably years ago. Another great time is today, and today’s the one you actually have.

A plan you start now beats the perfect plan you never got around to.

It’s really not too late.

Who is helping your unit's newest members figure out their first paycheck?

I still remember staring at my first LES and wondering who exactly this "F**A" person was and why he was taking my money. For a lot of young service members, that pay statement is the first real money decision they have ever had to make, and it shows up alongside TSP, SGLI, BAH, and about forty other acronyms.

After 21 years in the Navy, I can tell you nobody learns this stuff by osmosis. Somebody has to sit down and explain it. That's why my advisors and I are always glad to bring a financial workshop, Lunch and Learn, or webinar to your unit, your family readiness group, or your spouse's club.

I grew up in a military family and spent 21 years in the Navy myself. I know what it feels like to watch someone you love put on that uniform, and I know how much every family hopes and prays they'll come home.

For Gold Star families, that homecoming never came. Today I'm thinking of every mother, father, spouse, sibling, and child who has given more than any of us can ever repay. Your loved ones' service and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and neither will yours. I'm so grateful for you.
