Janet Sawyer-Gerber, founder and president of La Casita Mexican Grill, opened the original La Casita Patio Café on South Nevada Avenue on May 5, 1986 — inside a converted gas station.

Forty years later, that modest beginning has grown into a Colorado Springs institution. At the time, it was simply a small eatery with a big idea. Few would have predicted it would endure relocations, economic downturns and even a global pandemic.

A recent land transfer is sending signals that Buc-ee’s may be committed to building its second Colorado location at a controversial site near Monument Hill.

Buc-ee’s did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this year, Buc-ee’s withdrew its Palmer Lake application without citing an official reason.

As Space Command headquarters sets up shop in Alabama, local leaders highlighted the growth Colorado Springs can expect as the Space Force prepares for its budget to potentially double to $71 billion and its workforce to grow. https://buff.ly/DvmFUHu

Passenger rail along the Front Range could head to the ballot in 2026.

If approved, Colorado Springs could see a station in the works before 2031, likely near America the Beautiful Park and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum.

“We have a plan that we think is viable, and we’ll actually be able to get things started,” said John Putnam, chair of the Front Range Passenger Rail District Board.
