Many years ago, C.S. Lewis wrote, "Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work." What if this is right and the most important work doesn’t happen 9-5PM, but happens at dinner time around a kitchen table?

Or while at the playground. Or during Saturday morning chores. Or while hiking as a family?

Research says children develop their social interaction skills by 4 years old.

In other words, if we didn’t learn how to play with others as toddlers, we often struggle as adults.

This should remind us that the seemingly routine moments of life are very important! As parents, these moments will shape the next generation of moms and dads.

These kids that Bryan and I are blessed with... well, they are all amazing. Every day, I’m thankful God put them in my life. They really are “the most important work.”

Looking for the best spots to take your kiddos trick-or-treating this Halloween? 🎃 Here are my three favorite neighborhoods for trick-or-treating here in Colorado Springs.

👻 Old North End
If you love the spooky vibes, Old North End is the spot! Tons of families go all-out on decorating their homes, creating a fun atmosphere! Plus, it's near Colorado College and Monument Valley Park, so it’s a great convenient location!

🍬 Wolf Ranch
Known for having the BEST selection of candy. Find your candies, chocolates, and maybe even some king-sized candy bars!

🎃 Old Colorado City
Perfect spot for families! There’s a dedicated street for trick-or-treating, so it’s safe and tons of fun! The local businesses hand out candy, so the kids really have a great time!

Some other great spots include Briargate, Pleasant Valley, Broadmoor Glen, Stetson Hills, and the area around 21st and Cimarron.

Jim Thorpe had his running shoes stolen before the 1912 Olympics, but still won two gold medals wearing shoes he found in the trash.

And there are countless more examples like these of people who didn't let statistics define them.

Statistics can be helpful. We naturally look all around us to find patterns so that we can make better informed choices. It's our way of attempting to predict the future & see what lies ahead.

But we often forget, statistics don't take into account your individual choice, action, or path. Don't let where you are right now define where you end up. There's always a decision to make.

Statistics don't matter when you're a sample size of one.

A Dulce de Leche latte at The Best Coffee & Lounge costs $6.50. Meanwhile, the median price of a home in the United States is around four hundred thousand dollars right now. That means if you skipped one coffee per day, you could save up enough cash to buy your dream house in....just over 168 years.

This is why I think it's pretty dumb advice to tell people to skip out on simple luxuries to save for a house. The math just doesn't add up.

It's better to focus on the BIG things in your budget (car payment, always paying your credit card, student loans) than to worry too much about buying a coffee.

Sometimes the little things in life are what keep us sane, so we can have the discipline to make responsible decisions on the big things!
