Mortgage applications to buy a home jumped last week to the highest level in more than two years, even as rates ticked upwards. The Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday that its index of purchase applications rose 7.6% for the week — a 20% increase year-over-year as Americans sought out cheaper options, per CNBC. Government-backed mortgages such as FHA and VA loans spiked 9% for their best week since 2023. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages crept up to 6.40% from 6.37%, the highest since early October.
