Most things are winding down in Glacier by mid-October, from temperatures to visitation. But larch trees are just getting started!
Native to the Northwest, the western larch (Larix occidentalis) is a deciduous conifer, which means it has needles that grow each spring, then turn golden and fall off every autumn.
Larches are highly fire-adapted as well. Their thick bark helps them survive a fire, and their tiny wind-blown seeds scatter across a burn and become tiny larch seedlings. The North Fork has a rich fire history that is highlighted every fall by golden hillsides of larches.
Keep an eye out if you're in the park this fall!🍂
