Around this time of year, many of us in the area, start seeing announcements from The Daily Record's Top 100 Women award winners. As one who had the delight of being nominated and awarded this honor in years past, I always enjoy seeing friends and colleagues listed in that special "top 100" place.

Among the 2026 winners are two women I really admire are Melissa Hough Curtin, with whom I've worked in a volunteer capacity with the Foundation of Howard County, where she is the President and CEO; and Margaret Kim, principle consultant at Higher Ed Prep (and so much more).

Congrats to these amazing women, and to the whole lot of 2026 Top 100 Women award winners.

If you're around and want to attend, the awards event is coming up on May 4th.

Always great to hear from others in the regional CRE field.

Commercial real estate development companies and investors are reacting to softening conditions in the Northern Baltimore County commercial office sector in different ways.

Representatives from Blue and Obrecht Realty, Greenberg Gibbons, MLR Partners, and St. John Properties, Inc. explained their respective approaches and pivots – including downzoning, project retrofits and staying the course – to a Hunt Valley Business Forum.

You may know me as a long-time, area commercial real estate professional, but there are some who know me as a baking aficionado. And not just as an avid baker, but as one long-involved in state and county agricultural fairs as a Baking Judge.

Yes, it's true: someone has to sample and judge those 144 different cakes one day, or 210 different cookies another day, or 90 jams and jellies, and 215 pickles and relishes.

It's tougher than you might think to evaluate 39 different chocolate chip cookies! Which is why--after being a participant, competitor and judge in baking contests and events for so many years--I've started TEACHING how to be a Baking Judge. (I bet you probably didn't know you could take such a class, but it's true.)

Judging courses, such as the one I'm teaching, are offered by the And while we're not headed toward the Great British Bake Off, we do an admirable job preparing judges for their roles at county and state ag fairs.

Here's a fun story I wrote about a decade ago with some of my tips and insights for competitive bakers. And, of course, if you ever need an expert to evaluate your delicious baked goods (with maybe more than "just a bite"), you know who to call.

I'm on the hospital's foundation board, helping to raise money for various programs and improvements at the hospital.

Join us on Saturday, May 9th, 8:30 a.m., for the 2nd Nurses Run, a family-friendly, non-timed 5K and short loop bringing our community together in support of the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center's nurses.

This relaxed 5K is perfect for runners, walkers, families, and participants of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re aiming to jog the course, enjoy a casual walk with friends, or push a stroller along the way, this event is all about fun, fitness, and giving back...NOT the clock.

Proceeds from the event will help our nurses by providing continuing education, trainings, scholarships, and more.

I'm teaching the Baked Goods/Cakes class on the 11th for all you lovers of baking and caking. Judging at county and state fairs takes a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun. Come learn how it's done!

Looking forward to teaching the Baked Goods/Cakes class on the 11th!

We should all be so lucky as to have a wonderful local library in our lives (I most certainly am.)

And maybe some of us will be lucky enough to serve in a volunteer or leadership role in a community institution we cherish. (I most certainly do as a recently appointed trustee of the library's board.)

And some of us may even get to witness library do-gooding turned into a popular, fun and delightful fair. (I most certainly do with the library's annual Battle of the Books--my absolute favorite library-hosted event of the year.)

Teams of 5th graders from throughout the county, given a list of books to read ahead of time, then compete in this well-attended event, testing their knowledge of the books, characters, plot lines and details large and small.

If you're a local parent of a young kid who does read -- or you're hoping will read more -- this event is not to be missed. Friday, April 24th.

It's such a huge event, it's held at the ! To play along, you can get the list of books ahead of time -- all of them plentiful and available at the HoCo Libraries.

What a lovely event. The team spirit, quality of service and capability--and extraordinariness--of the medical teams is one thing to know; and other thing to celebrate, together. It's not always easy doing fundraising (as I do for the hospital's foundation board), but what a great organization to do it for!
