Today would have been my mother-in-law Alice’s birthday. 💛
Two years ago, we lost Alice to carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation after lightning struck her home. Her hearing aids were out for the night. The smoke detector was in a distant room — and it wasn’t monitored. By the time anyone knew something was wrong, it was too late.
You never think this could happen to someone you know and love. It happened to us.
We’re sharing her story because we want good to come from our pain — and because this is so, so preventable.
A few questions to ask yourself today:
🏠 Is your home prone to lightning strikes?
🔔 Do you have monitored smoke alarms — ones that alert someone even if you can’t hear them?
⚠️ Do you have monitored carbon monoxide detectors?
As a Realtor, I can’t tell you how many homes (and Airbnbs) I walk into where the smoke detector has been pulled off the wall, or the batteries are missing entirely. Please — check yours today.
And please, check on your older family members and loved ones especially. A hearing aid that’s out overnight, a detector in the wrong room, a battery nobody thought about — these are the small, human, forgivable things that can turn into an unthinkable loss.
Alice was so loved. She was a mother, a grandmother, a friend to so many. If sharing her story means even one family gets a monitored system installed this week, that’s a birthday gift she would have wanted more than anything.
