Is Your Real Estate Agent a Chocolatier? (Doubt It, But He Could Be)
When I first began my real estate career in earnest around a dozen or so years ago, one of my biggest buyer clients told me he chose me specifically because I was also a chocolatier. How many working real estate agents could there be who also temper couverture chocolate and pipe ganache into tiny hand-painted shells on the off times? Not many. Maybe just me.
At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I assumed he just liked chocolate or maybe he just wanted someone a little off the beaten path. But over the years, I’ve come to understand that what he really was looking for was someone who brings care, creativity, and maybe a little obsessive craftsmanship to what they do. And that’s exactly what also being a chocolatier has taught me.
For years before I ever sold a home or negotiated a deal, I was obsessing over tempering chocolate; its silky textures, creating just the right snap of a finished truffle. Chocolate is one of those things that doesn’t forgive laziness or inattention. It demands focus, precision, consistency, and above all, patience. As it turns out, so does being successful at real estate.
Let’s be honest: nobody needs a chocolatier. It’s not a utility, it’s a luxury, an indulgence. But, when someone goes that extra mile to create a little magic, people take notice. In real estate, I aim for the same thing. Not just showing houses, but curating an experience. Not just closing deals, but making it feel like someone cared how it got done. Whether that’s catching a red flag in a home inspection or finding that one weird zoning detail others overlooked, I treat the whole process like a handmade product.
So, is your real estate agent a chocolatier? Probably not. But maybe they’re a former carpenter, poet, or a yoga instructor. The point is, who your agent is outside of real estate can tell you a lot about how they’ll be when the pressure is on. As for me, I still make chocolate. Not as often as I’d like but enough to stay sharp, enough to remember that a little artistry can go a long way in any field. If you ever want to talk about homes, or nibs and ganache, I’m your guy. ;)
