Meet "Humphrey", the Happy Houses' Logo (and the 800lb wrestler that inspired him)

Over a half century ago, when I was but a wee lad, I would often spend my free time with my grandparents at their small electronics concession at Silver's on Main street in Columbia, SC. It was an impressionable time for me and I would relish spending time with them and the diverse people that worked there. Without getting into too many details, it was a cavalcade of unique characters that I have told myself one day I would detail in a novel. For example, there was a cashier with elephantitis, the store manager died from AIDS that he contracted through a blood transfusion but, one of my favorites from this cast of characters was Happy Humphrey. Happy at that time held 2 world records; one for being the heaviest man alive (800 pounds) and having lost the most weight (570 pounds). Happy had a shoe repair concession at the back of the store near the manager's office and, whenever I was there, my grandfather would take me to say hello. Happy was aptly named-he was a jovial, soft spoken man, someone you never would have guessed used to be a professional wrestler in the 60's and 70's.

"That's great but, what does this have to do with your real estate brokerage?" you may ask. When I was initially naming the brokerage, the first best 25 ideas I came up with had unfortunately already been taken, including the domain names. Then, I had an epiphany-I needed something simple, iconic but still evocative. I also knew that names don't always tell you what the business is (i.e. Starbucks, Amazon). Full disclosure, I wasn't initially taken with the name Happy Houses. But, at once, it all seemed to come together. I could hear "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin in my head. Then, I created the logo design as a smiling house. For the final piece, I named the logo "Humphrey" as a tribute to Happy, a nod to my grandparents, and the meaningfulness of those experiences growing up.

So, when you see Humphrey on our advertising, now you know the REST of the story. ;)

Is Your Real Estate Agent a Chocolatier? (Doubt It, But He Could Be)

When I first began my real estate career in earnest around a dozen or so years ago, one of my biggest buyer clients told me he chose me specifically because I was also a chocolatier. How many working real estate agents could there be who also temper couverture chocolate and pipe ganache into tiny hand-painted shells on the off times? Not many. Maybe just me.
At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I assumed he just liked chocolate or maybe he just wanted someone a little off the beaten path. But over the years, I’ve come to understand that what he really was looking for was someone who brings care, creativity, and maybe a little obsessive craftsmanship to what they do. And that’s exactly what also being a chocolatier has taught me.
For years before I ever sold a home or negotiated a deal, I was obsessing over tempering chocolate; its silky textures, creating just the right snap of a finished truffle. Chocolate is one of those things that doesn’t forgive laziness or inattention. It demands focus, precision, consistency, and above all, patience. As it turns out, so does being successful at real estate.
Let’s be honest: nobody needs a chocolatier. It’s not a utility, it’s a luxury, an indulgence. But, when someone goes that extra mile to create a little magic, people take notice. In real estate, I aim for the same thing. Not just showing houses, but curating an experience. Not just closing deals, but making it feel like someone cared how it got done. Whether that’s catching a red flag in a home inspection or finding that one weird zoning detail others overlooked, I treat the whole process like a handmade product.
So, is your real estate agent a chocolatier? Probably not. But maybe they’re a former carpenter, poet, or a yoga instructor. The point is, who your agent is outside of real estate can tell you a lot about how they’ll be when the pressure is on. As for me, I still make chocolate. Not as often as I’d like but enough to stay sharp, enough to remember that a little artistry can go a long way in any field. If you ever want to talk about homes, or nibs and ganache, I’m your guy. ;)
